Accelerator and Brake Question

Hello all. I've got a 2005 LS Sedan Automatic.

Today I was attemtping to start my car and it started up fine. But when I pressed the brake it seemed tight and didn't go down very far. Accelerator also felt locked up and didn't accelerate really at all. When I was starting the car my foot was on the brake I believe. I turned it off and tried again and it was fine, without my foot on the brake. I've had this incident once before and was very confused as to the problem. I may just be screwing up and my car was just on electrically and not the engine running. I really am not sure what I was doing wrong. I'm pretty sure the car was on but again it was still funky. Some safety thing or what? I restarted it and it was just fine.

Started in drive or park or something. I don't know...

Ideas?

Good morning Denther,

I was checking through your manual and wanted to see if you had seen the "BRAKE" message in your driver information center when this occurred?

The exclamation mark?

No I did not see that. I noticed my check engine lot was on when this happened though. It's not normally on and it went off when I restarted. I almost wonder if I was just being stupid and didn't fully start my car and tried to move. I was on a slight incline backwards. Would putting it in reverse allow me to roll backwards when not under power?

Hello Denther,
I'm looking at the manual and it designates that the exclamation point would only show on Canadian vehicles; are you located in Canada? If so, I can get you information on how to contact Customer Assistance there.

If you want for your vehicle to roll backwards without being on, I would recommend shifting to neutral.

Ok I was just being stupid. I had my car on but only so that the stereo and other electronics were working, then shifted into reverse and began to roll back. Brakes weren't working since I didn't have the car on and the accelerator wasn't working since the engine wasn't on. I didn't hear it since I had music on in the car.

Don't mind me, I'm just being stupid sometimes.

I tested this theory today in my driveway and sure enough you roll backwards when the car isn't on and you're in reverse.

Car's fine. I'm stupid. Thanks for the help though!

Next time have your coffee before you leave the house, it helps to be awake when you are going to drive.

But seriously I've done similar stuff, like backing in a parking spot in between two cars and one of the cars takes off and you end up slamming the brakes because you find you're going to fast, because your only reference is the vehicle taking off.

It was in the evening. I had gotten in the car and turned it on, then sat waiting for someone, decided to turn it off to save gas but left stereo on (fairly loud). Then the other person showed up and I tried backing up. Kinda scary when your brakes refuse to work.

your brakes should still have worked, even with the car off... or at least mine do.
