Need Help Programming a New Key

So I lost both of my spare keys, but still had my non electronic key to get into my car. So I ordered and got my electronic keys made, except the directions the chevy dealership gave me sound rough to follow. It says turn on the ignition with the engine off??! Then turn off the ignition. Isn't the ignition the last turn before turning your car over? Please advise!

Pretty sure if you don't have a valid key left that you need a 10 minute key relearn or a TechII to erase the old ones and program the new ones. If you only lost one and still have a valid key then you can use the ignition method.

I assume here you are in the USA.

Replacing Keys (Except Canada)
10-Minute Vehicle Key Relearn
10-Minute Vehicle Key Relearn
Important: This procedure will only relearn the vehicle keys. This procedure will not learn the start enable password. Do not use this procedure as a substitute for a 10-minute relearn when replacing or reprogramming a theft deterrent module (TDM) or engine control module (ECM). Doing so will result in a failure to learn the required password.

This 10-minute learn procedure should be used when all vehicle keys are desired to be replaced or reprogrammed. This procedure will erase all previously learned vehicle keys from the TDM. Once the 10-minute learn procedure has been completed, any remaining vehicle keys may be programmed using the Adding Keys procedure to ensure their continued functionality.

Connect a scan tool to the vehicle.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
With a scan tool, select Request Info. under Service Programming System and follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
Disconnect the scan tool from the vehicle and connect the scan tool to a Techline Terminal with the current Service Programming System (SPS) software.
On the Techline Terminal, select Service Programming System and follow the Techline Terminal on-screen instructions. Ensure the correct programming selection is chose based on component being replaced or programmed. For this procedure, go to the V.T.D. Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn menu and choose the Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn for Learning Replacement Keys selection.
Disconnect the scan tool from the Techline Terminal and reconnect the scan tool to the vehicle.
With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, select Program ECU under Service Programming System.
At this point the scan tool must remain connected for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.
Important:

• The scan tool may initially display 12 Minutes. The first 2 minutes allow the scan tool to initialize the appropriate control module. The remaining 10 minutes is the relearn timer.

• On some vehicles the security indicator may be illuminated for the duration of the 10-minute relearn procedure.

Observe the scan tool, after approximately 10 minutes the scan tool will display "Programming Successful, Turn OFF Ignition". The vehicle is now ready to relearn the key information and/or the passwords on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK.
Turn OFF the ignition and wait 2 minutes.
With a master vehicle key, turn the ignition to the RUN position for 15 seconds, then start the vehicle. The TDM has now learned the key transponder information.
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

30-Minute Vehicle Key RelearnImportant: This procedure will only relearn the vehicle keys. This procedure will not learn the start enable password. Do not use this procedure as a substitute for a 10-minute relearn when replacing or reprogramming a TDM or ECM. Doing so will result in a failure to learn the start enable password.

This 30-minute learn procedure should be used when all vehicle keys are desired to be replaced or reprogrammed. This procedure will erase all previously learned vehicle keys from the TDM. Once the 30-minute learn procedure has been completed, any remaining vehicle keys may be programmed using the Adding Keys procedure to ensure their continued functionality.

With an unlearned master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Observe the security indicator, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn off.
Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
Important: The TDM learns the key transponder information upon the ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.

With a master vehicle key, start the vehicle. The vehicle has now learned the key transponder information.
If additional keys are required to be learned, refer to Adding Keys .
With a scan tool, clear any DTCs.

I know the 30 minute relearn works. I've done it. Coby7 do happen to know where to find how to add-keys as stated at the bottom of the 30 minute relearn.

Yes I do.

---------- Post added at 11:47 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:17 AM ----------

Adding Keys
Important:

• To initiate, this procedure requires that a learned master key be available.

• A total of 10 master keys or valet keys may be programmed to a single vehicle.

• This procedure adds keys only. The procedure does not erase previously learned keys.

• The keys to be learned must duplicate the mechanical cut of the current key.

• If more than one valet key is to be learned, immediately precede each valet key with a learned master key.

With a previously learned master key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key.
Within 10 seconds insert the key to be learned. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. The vehicle has now learned the new key.

So do I Only need a scan tool to program my car or a specific one? One that has a little more features than others??

---------- Post added at 10:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ----------

Couldn't I program it without the scan tool?

Maybe I'm not expressing myself clear enough. If you have no master key left you need to do the 10 minute learn procedure posted above "Post 3". No short cuts here, the 10 minute procedure takes 10 minutes. Then use the procedure ADD KEY also posted above "Post 5" for second key. If this doesn't work you will need a TechII.

If you tried starting your car with the new keys without doing the learn procedure and you've activated the theft deterent module, then you will need to do the second procedure in "Post 3" The 30 minute procedure which is the same as the one you posted. And yes this takes 30 minutes.

Ya I believe you do for a "Proper text book install" but for a rushed, dire need to program a key, you do not need a scan tool. All you need is to is your cut key, and to follow the procedure on the youtube.com
