06 Cobal, Overheating and Sputtering/choking

i just started driving my car today and i noticed it was sputtering as i was driving, seems like it's choking or something. also noticed the coolant temp was steadily rising and not going down. this has never happened before, what can it be? please, any information would be valuable. thanks

Not much info but a cracked head gasket would do it, but you would get a check engine light with a misfire code.
