Keyless Remote Programming

My wife owns a 2007 cobalt. Her keyless remote has stopped working mostly. When I say mostly, I mean everything but the trunk no longer works on it. I opened it up and a couple of tiny pieces of metal came out. I figure that there's no longer a connection to most of the buttons because of that. Anyway, I figured I would buy her one off of ebay for fairly cheap. Then comes the programming part. Do I absolutely have to take it to a dealer to get programmed or is there a way I can do it myself? I looked through some of the other threads about this but didn't see a definitive answer. Anyway, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge, only dealers can program new ones. Coby7, one of our mods is highly trained in electronics and repairs key fobs for a very reasonable price. You'd save a bunch of money doing it that way.

Thank you for the quick response, I'll ask him about it. Thanks again.

No problem, that's what we're here for! I'm sure he'll see this in the morning and reply, but if not we'll make sure he gets in touch.

Also, welcome!

Doesn't have to be a dealer but you do need a TechII with GM software to program your car to the new remote. I do this all the time no big deal, just a bit tricky because drop down menu "Program Key FOB" is never in the same place for different cars and different years. Repairing yours is definitely the cheapest route. I do mail-ins all the time and people are very satisfied so far. I once repaired one where the guy had backed over his.

slightly off topic but the manual states that keyfobs with remote start have a farther range. found that pretty interesting

Well that's interesting since it's the same board. Now you've got me intrigued I will have to experiment and document and test this affirmation. Damn you Bronx!!!
