Getting a Cobalt That Hasn't Been Maintained, Should I Be Worried?

Hello everyone, I'm new and have a question for all of you seasoned Cobalt owners. I've gone without a car for a while now, and my father is planning on giving me his Cobalt (In favor of a FR-S). However, I know that this car hasn't been maintained properly, and I'm a little weary about whether I'm getting a free car, or a free repair bill. :/

The car is an 06 LT coupe, with 60k miles. However, it's been driven around with 0% Oil life for about 3 1/2 months (approx. 3k miles) now and to my knowledge, none of the filters were replaced. Hell, I don't think it's ever had a tune up since he bought it at 45k, and the brakes feel like they stutter even when gradually stopping from 45mph. The car also idles somewhat rough (a faint hesitation every now and then). I live in New Jersey if it matters.

I know I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth, but should I try to get out of this car ASAP, or am I just being paranoid?

Take it. Filters are cheap, and it probably will just need an oil change and front brakes

the only thing i would worry about is the funny idle, but after new filters and a few oil changes it should start to run smoother.probably just needs front brakes,if you have to then maybe spark plugs but probably wont need them, all of those said and done wont set you back too bad for the car you will be getting

Stock rotors are prone to warping, so you may need to swap those out. Is there damage to the engine? I'm not sure anyone could guess on that. Was the oil synthetic or dino?

Like was said, change the oil. Most of the other stuff you don't need to worry about until 100K unless you really like to baby your car. If it were me, I'd change all the fluids and filters, throw in some new plugs, and poke around for anything else that doesn't look up to snuff. Might cost you a couple hundred bucks and then see how she runs.

Welcome, we're glad you're here!

^This is how I operate. But it did make me spend just as much on parts for my Altima as I bought the car for at this point, so.....
lol, just so you know my Altima has 232k on the clock and burns a little oil, no other problems.

And welcome!

Blackbalts, thanks for not ripping into me lol. Usually people are like, "You're wasting your money, wait 'til 100K!" When it comes to preventative maintenance I tend to think that the engineers are a just a wee bit overconfident. Either that or I am just OCD. Probably more the latter than the former

I always do a complete tune up even if stuff looks new. That gives me a good foundation if any problems arise
