Squeaky Shift Knob

The shift knob on my automatic 2.2 sedan is making a slight squeaking noise when touched. The sound is coming from below the lever. It makes this noise when attempting to pull it. I know the manual recommends to lubricate the shift linkage on manuals and specifies the lube, however it says nothing about the automatics. Do they still need this service and if not will doing this still make the noise go away?

Take off the center console and see where the noise is coming from...
