Exhaust Camshaft Sensor Code P0014

first off i have a 2009 colbalt LT 2.2l nothing fancy, completely stock 72k miles. yesterday i was driving home cruising on the highway and my check engine light popped on, prompting me to pull over and check things out visually. nothing sounded out of the norm and everything seemed to be good. i get it home and take it to the local O'reillys and use their scan tool to pull the codes. what i got was this

Exhaust Camshaft Position (CMP) System Performance

does this mean the sensor has gone bad? the car seemed to be running smooth for the remainder of my drive home, decent gas mileage and whatnot. is there a way to test this thing with say my multimeter? ive got roughly 1500 miles left till my warentee expires so if it needs to be fixed i'd like to do it so as i drive that many miles in just a matter of a few weeks.

Welcome to the forum! Is the warranty you're referring to one of our General Motors Protection Plans?

Your engine probably has variable cam actuators. This code doesn't mean that your cam position sensor is bad, it means your cam actuator did not bring cam position to where the ECM wanted it to be. Procrastination of regular oil changes is usually the cause or wrong oil viscosity grade. Are you due for and oil change, are oil levels low?

the warranty i got on the car is one that was offered from the dealership when i bought it. the standard warranty from GM has already expired and this was a bumper to bumper one that came with my car. i am about due for another oil change here any time, maybe i shall crawl upder it this weekend and dump that oil. thanks!
