Problems in 1st Gear -Whiningg-

When coming to a stop (while in first with the clutch in) the car makes a whining noise. It also slightly makes this noise when accelerating in first. The first gear is also a bit picky, and I have to move the gear shift tight against my leg to be able to shift into first smoothly (i dont think this is related to the whining problem) The clutch is in great shape so I'm quick to assume this is a tranny problem.

I have began, to shift from 2nd into neutral when coming to a stop, and moving into first once im ready to go.

Any insight on what the noise might be?

Thanks

Im not sure if this is very helpful, but I think its the design of the transmission that makes it so you cannot shift into first easily unless you are going less than 10mph or are stopped. If you try to shift into 1st while moving over 10mph it will make a whirring noise and will be more difficult to push the shifter into 1st.

If you cant get into 1st gear from a dead stop, ensure the clutch is pressed all the way in before selecting a gear. from the most part, hard to shift in any gear, always check the linkage first, thats always the first assumption cause it has to shift a detent spring from the clutch fork in order for the synchro sleeve to move into the gear ring.

for whining of gear, check your fluid levels, if possible. I do not know if we even have the luxury of a trans dip stick in manuals. (I have not looked at it before), but I assume we dont. When was the last time you had your trans fluid flushed?

I've had the car for a little under 40k now, and havent had the trans fluid flushed. I have been told that I should flush it and add Royal purple, i guess it works wonders.

Royal purple makes wonders for engine oil. GM vehicles may not agree on trans fluid. Same with the B&M synthetic additives. Use the OEM fluid if possible, trans fluid comes with its own sythetics to ensure that each gear is properly lubricated and you wont cause any whipping or whining sounds. So, if a guy at Autozone requests that fluid, chances are, he has no mechanical experience. Im over at UTi and all the senior master ASE instructors urge to use OEM as much as possible since its backed and tested on everyday cars.

If you have a manual you shouldn't need to change your fluid. LSCobalt07 is correct. The trans will not allow you to downshift into first a higher than roughly 10 mph to protect your trans.

Could be low or could be the nature of the trans. Every manual car I have had, had a whine when trying to go to first or while in first(very faint if its taking off). This was before I learned how to treat a manual trans and stopped trying to downshift into first. Only time I try that is when barely moving.
