Key Sticks in Ignition and Alarm Goes Off when Unlocking with Key

Hello,
I have a used 2005 Base model automatic 4 door Cobalt. We purchased it about 9 months ago - has only 30,000 miles.
There are a couple of problems that seem to be related.
1. When we bought it - both key fobs worked. Since either the key fobs went bad. On one the metal piece that holds the battery on the inside came loose from the circuit board. The other just doesn't work - even with exchanging the battery.
2. When you put the car in park and turn off the key - the ignition key doesn't turn all the way to enable you to pull it out of the ignition. We have to presss a small button that is located in a small hole under the steering column and then turn the key the final turn in order to pull it out. This problem has been present since we bought the car with only 18,000 miles on it.
3. Because the key fobs don't work - we have to unlock the car using the ignition key - the alarm goes off. In order to shut off the alarm - you must start the car.

Other than these problems - this is a great car!
Any help will be much appreciated.

Welcome! Thanks for coming here with the problems.

He also performs repairs for very fair prices if you're interested.

2. You will most likely need to replace the ignition cylinder, which should be covered under recall. Information on that can be found here: https://www.yourcobalt.com/forums/pro...placement.html
There's also a chance it is related to your shift assembly (I ended up replacing both to solve my issues). Does the key release if you try to re-engage the shifter? Is it only when you key out, or does it happen when you key the car on?

3. Can't offer you much help here. I'd assume #1 would remedy this.

I have been told that there is something that engages when the Shifter is put into Park that is supposed to depress a sylinoid? Not sure. Is there any truth to that?

That is true. The replacement shifter has a metal sleeve instead of just the plastic. If this is the problem, the shifter should slide out of park without pressing the shift button. If it's your cylinder, you should have trouble keying the car to the on position, as well as back. I found that the shifter problem only presented itself when moving the key to off. Like I said, in my case I had 2 separate issues together, confusing the situation.

My advice would be to have the cylinder covered under recall, and if problems persist then move to the shifter diagnosis.

Same thing happened to me.
I took it to the dealership and it was covered under warranty.
For trying to put the key out of the ignition and it doesn't out, my problem was a fuse was blown. that's all.
Dealership replaced the fuse and all was good.
Tell me what you end up figuring out.

What year is your car?
Mine is a 2006 and was told by dealer in Canada that only 2007 and up are covered...
