Engine Whining Sound

After I did my water pump I seem to be hearing this sound.

It doesn't seem normal to me but I guess it could be, its been so long with the waterpump bad that I don't remember how its supposed to sound. Tomorrow im going to take off the serp belt to eliminate that, my main question is could this be the balance shaft chain tensioner? I cant seem to find a video to hear what it sounds like.

I only notice it from about 1300-3000rpm but then the exhaust and intake gets to loud for me to hear it.

just asked my brother about his and he said his last engine made that sound the whole time he had it and this new (used) motor is making the same whine.

I hope youre right, I guess ill know tomorrow when I take off the belt. I used the OTC tool to do the waterpump so it'd definitely hurt my feelings if its the balance shaft tensioner

so just removed the serp belt and its still making the noise :(

any other ideas before i get forced to remove the timing cover?

---------- Post added at 10:55 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:58 AM ----------

listened to a 2003 sunfire with a 2.2 and it doesnt make the same sound. Once I get in there (to the balance chain) is there a way to tell if the tensioner ratcheted out? Should i just change the tensioner while im in there anyway? I've done lots of auto repair but ive purposely stayed away from timing chains.

That is not a chain noise though. Might just be your new water pump not broken in yet or still getting air.

Did you add a SC in your sleep?! lol

Sounds like alternator to me, but you already ruled that out. Good luck!

I read online that if the tensioner ratchets out for the balance shaft that it will cause a whine. The whine is clearly coming from that side of the engine. I was just at the dealership and bought the tensioner and crank bolt.

I'll probably pull it apart tonight and see whats up, something has to be wrong for it to be making this sound, ive never heard a waterpump make a whine sound and normally if theres air in there the heat wouldnt be consistent

another link to the sound, this guy's is timing chain related

well im 30mins in and im putting it back together, labour time of 5hours is a joke. most this should take is 2 hours if you have no clue what you're doing at all.

everything including the guides look like brand new, only thing that i noticed was the balance shaft chain was pretty tight with almost no slack at all, the timing chain had considerably more and that has barely any. Im putting in a new tensioner just because i tore it open and im not leaving in old tensioners (i like to do things once)

So you're changing both tensioners?

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

I only did the balance chain tensioner. The noise is still there but maybe its just this engine. I was mostly worried that the tensioner tightened up and the longevity of my engine was at risk. Now that I've had that side apart and everything looked like new I can stop worrying. If my phone would take video and put it into a reasonable format I would upload the sound.
