Misfire Help!

Hey Guys,

My wifes Cobalt is on the fritz again! Its an 06', 2.2 with 125k miles. I have been experiencing an inconsistent misfire, PO 301 is the code that sets repeatedly. Sometimes it runs fine and there is no problem. At times it feels like a cyl. is randomly dropping in and out with some stumbling, other times it feels like there's a completely dead cylinder and if I run it hard, the check engine light will flash.
It has gotten to the point its not safe to drive because the engine will shut off going down the road or at an intersection.
I replaced the spark plugs around 100k miles and have recently swapped them around to see if the misfire moved cylinders, it didnt...
I was going to try swapping coils around but dont know much about these engines...
Not exactly sure what my next step should be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated and as always, Thanks in advance!

How does the spark plug look? White or black? Try switching your fuel injectors too. If that doesn't work, buy a new coil pack

Yep, you probably need a new coil pack. 05-06 are known for this problem. Don't wait too long or you will destroy your CAT.

From what I remember plugs looked good, white-ish colored.
Do you recommend replacing coil with a GM part or aftermarket?
Did GM improve this design or will I be installing the same part with the same potential problem?
Looks like you can get coil with ICM or without... Would this be a good time to replace the module also? Are there any issues with them?

If ghost white, you're running really lean and should look at servicing or buying newer injectors. Try running injector cleaner first though. Also wouldn't be coilpack necessarily because we know you are getting spark, but they switched to independent coils on the 2.2 in 07. I have my stock injectors if you want to pay me for a tank of gas plus shipping, be like 30 bucks through paypal. My injectors have like 45k on them and regularly had injector cleaner through them.

Did these engines have injector problems too?
I will pull the plugs again to compare #1 to the other three plugs.

No but if you're at 125k and have never put injector cleaner in or replaced the fuel filter, it would make sense that things may be gummed up and partially clogged

Injectors are fairly easy to swap. You know your misfire is on cylinder 1 because of the code P0301, so swap injectors 1 and 2. If misfire code changes to P0302 you know you have a bad injector. If it remains P0301 then you have a bad coil. If it was the ignition module you would have 2 misfire codes of about equal errors. I believe 1&4 are together and 2&3
