Please Help! Worried Ins is Going to Total My Cobalt :(

Last week a girl cut across three lanes of traffic, hitting my passenger side and forcing me to drive up over a concrete barrier or median ( not sure what it is called exactly- it was to divide a turn lane). At first glance, damage did not seem too bad:

Cracks/ scrapes on both sides of front bumper ( on my side from hitting the sign )
Passenger side mirror and headlight broken
Some sort of damge to front right tire, hubcap came off and tire looked torn up.
Misc body damge along entire passenger side. Nothing huge.

When I went to drive the car... my steering felt very loose. I can tell something is definitely wrong with the alignment. I noticed it was struggling to accelerate and making odd noise. Then my service air bag light came on ( airbags did not deploy). When I hit even the slightest bump my car feels like the tire is going to fly off.

The girl got a ticket and her insurance is accepting fault. They had me take it to a shop and someone will be looking at it next week. I thought no big deal, they'll fix it etc... until the adjuster on the phone said " it is an 07 cobalt... we might just be looking at a total loss here " WTF. My car isn't anything great... it is the regular model ( ls coupe ) and has 125k on it ...but I LOVE MY CAR. Not to mention it was just paid off from brand new last year.

What I'm trying to figure out here.. is if I should prepare myself for them to total it. I know nothing about cars or how much the repairs should be expected to cost. It didn't look THAT bad to me... but the concrete barrier? I hit was large and raised enough for my car to get stuck on. I hit it straight down the middle of my car at about 35-40. Could that have caused a significant amount of damage ?

I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of the body damage. I've never been in an accident and I wasn't even thinking.

Any help or input is REALLY appreciated!!! I'm so upset right now.

Side note.. kbb says my car is private value $3, 700. If that helps at all.

Blackbalts (tom) car got totalled by just the front and rear bumpers getting smashed along with some body damage. If it were me, I'd take whatever i could get. Understanding you like your car, just buy another one because you will never sell that car for near 3700

I agree with Banker balt, our cars even though we love them dearly, at the end of the day they're still Cobalt's l hate to say it but it's true, I say take those 3700 bills and use it as a down payment on something newer, I personally would use it on a new Camaro SS but then again that's me

Thank you very much for your reply. I know it sounds silly, but I am pretty attached to the car. I guess I'm just trying to gauge how much the car ( mechanically ) could have really been messed up. Also, body work is really that expensive??? Crazy. I guess I've just never had to look into it before :(

Thank you. You hit the nail on the head... I guess until I actually had someone else tell me the car is practically worth nothing, I never thought of it that way. Do they usually give you close to what kbb says?

I don't know on that part but If they do give you that, that would be perfect even If it's a little less our cars don't go for much as it is

They will total it. Just go out and buy another Cobalt. My sisters 02 civic was totaled from just hitting 2 curbs and spinning out. Sry about the loss of the car...

The thing is, with body damage, cost of parts is not that expensive, however, all the labor involved is. Being that the cobalt is a unibody, even if the body was flex just a little bit could be ground for totalling it. But you have to think too, when insurance is going to be paying for the repairs, they take the whole cost of the job (parts/labor) and weigh that against the BBV (blue-book value). IF the cost of the job is like 90% or more of the BBV, they will total the car as it isn't worth it to fix it, even if we think it is.

I'd say, start looking for another car, because by the sounds of the damage as well as the mechanical damage, age of the car, and mileage, they will be totalling out that car for sure.

If you like your 07 Cobalt coupe and your car is totaled. Take the money and put it towards a low mile 2010 Cobalt coupe. You will feel at home and maybe upgraded a bit.

Body work is super expensive, and I could definitely see them totaling that car out due to all the damage you've described.

My advice is to haggle with them over the payout. Make sure they give you enough to get a comparable replacement car, not just whatever the KBB value is. Shop around and print off some examples of very similar cars in your area that are being sold for more than the amount they are willing to pay you for the totaled Cobalt. Most insurance companies will bump up the payout if you negotiate a little.
