2009 Cobalt LS - Key Stuck In "A" Position and Won't Come Out

I have a 2009 Cobalt with 130,000 miles. It's running strong and I haven't had many issues.

Yesterday when I drove to work, the key would not come out of the ignition. It can't turn between A, the third option, and ON, but it can't turn to the off position, and thus I can't remove it.

I looked online and discovered that I can remove the key by going underneath the steering wheel and going through this little compartment and pushing the release button, but this is no permanent solution.

Does anyone know if this would be covered by warranty? It seems like a defective part. Otherwise, has anyone had this issue before or have any advice on how to fix this issue?

I appreciated any input. Thanks!

Based on what you said you can't turn the key at all?? Sound like your ignition is shot.

I should have been more specific, the key does turn, to every position except off, so there're si snow no problem starting the engine and turning off the engine (A). The problem is that it does not move to the off position, which is the only position that you can remove the key in.

I've done that, and have searched several forums, but didn't find any clear answer to the issue or anything that I could try. I have a hunch that it's related to the security system of the car.

I believe your Park switch on your Auto shifter has become ascue. Remove top of your console cover ( It just snaps into place ) and push park switch back into place. Make sure you hear it click.

This happened to me except being a manual I don't get that switch to get it out. Mine got stuck in the on and had to be warrantied at the dealership. They have an upgraded tumbler that doesn't have this issue anymore.

That key binding was the same issue I had about a year ago, turned out it was a recall, so I would first call a local dealership and give them your last 8 of the VIN to see if its still open. GM HQ will cover the cost of parts/labor, maybe even the tow to there. Wouldn't hurt to call for free.
