Switch is probably just worn out. Not sure what's involved to change them on a cobalt but most vehicles is just two bolts and a plug

2009 Ford Escape Limited - 3.0L, 6 speed auto, 4x4, 25/33 city/hwy imp mpg.
2017 F150 XLT-XTR - 5.0L, 4x4, 3.55's, E-locker, xtr chrome package, fx4 off-road package.
20/25 imp mpg

This happened to my cobalt. I think it's a pretty common problem. Buy a new switch and change it out. It's an east fix. Just pull the cover off the steering column by removing the 3 screws from the bottom. Release the tabs holding the switch in place, unclip the harness plug and replace the switch.
