Random Hesitation when Accelerating

Hoping to find a possible cause to my problem. I have searched the forum but cannot find a problem that matches mine. I have a 2006 LT sedan, 2.2L with automatic trans.

Sometimes when I accelerate (it seems to be random), the car will not start moving until I've pressed the pedal down about 2 inches. Other times, it's almost TOO responsive and I lurch forward as if I'm racing someone (maybe because I'm expecting the hesitation and pressing too hard). I love when it is really responsive, as the car is pretty peppy and fun to drive. But when it is "hesitating", it seems to perform more poorly altogether.

I put a K&N air filter in last fall in hopes it would help, but it has made no difference. It doesn't get the best mileage either, maybe 21 mpg around town. Is it just in need of a tuneup? We have not yet done that. I hope it's that easy. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

How many miles? And by tune up you mean oil change?

Your fuel filter might be plugged.

Hmm, I guess a tune up these days simply means spark plugs. So that is what I meant. We get the oil changed every 3,000 miles. It has about 120,000 on it.

Yeah do the fuel filter and spark plugs. Think about cleaning the throttle body. And clean the K&N air filter, or oil it (whatever it takes
