Cobalt Went Completley Dead

I was in my Cobalt today waiting to pick up my sister from work, I had the engine off and the radio eventually shut off to keep the battery from dying. But when I turned the key to start it, I got nothing, no starter, no dash lights, nothing, it was like its was completely dead and had no battery. I opened the door and the dash lights and dome light came on and the car started right up after that. What could have caused this problem?
