Steering

I have a 2007 Cobalt ls and I have a lot of play in the steering. Also every so often there will be a grinding noise when I start to turn right. It will make the noise for a few days and then stop and keep doing that. I feel like it's the rack and pinion assembly but I'm not sure. What do you guys think?

Look in behind the front drivers wheel and get someone to move the steering wheel back and forth. You'll see the intermediate shaft and you'll be able to see if that's the play.

I checked the intermediate shaft and it all turns good. Even where it goes into the rack and pinion. There has to be something loose in there
