Rack and Pinion

from a previous thread on steering shaft........

Well....installing a new steering shaft did not solve my problem, altough the steering is a little smoother and the u-joint on the old shaft was a little stiff. I still had a 'creeking' intermittent noise when turning to the right and sometimes a rattle while driving straight on the highway (60 mph).
I looked at the front left strut and had my son turn the steering left to right a few times but could not really see anything wrong, coil spring was moving smoothly and could not feel any vibes when I put my hand on top of the strut (Lifetime warranty Monroe quick strut was installed 3 years ago, along with MOOG links, MOOG LCA and stab bar bushings). But when I put 150 lbs on the left side of the hood (my other son), the steering became really stiff and the coil spring was moving erraticaly. With the weight on the right side, steering was alright.
So I went ahead with a free replacement Monroe strut..still have the creeking noise and rattle.
No up and down movement of the tire when the car is jacked so the ball joint is fine and only slight left to right movement.

Is the RACK and PINION the culprit ? How to diagnose for sure a bad rack and pinion....looks fairly straight forward to remove and replace but approx $350.00 for the part...

Thanks for your advice.

well a new steering rack fixed my problem...also put in new outer tie rods while I was at it. Fairly simple job, just had to remove a bolt on the rear tranny mount to make room for the rack when I pulled it out from the left wheel well. Got it aligned and the car now drives like new...........
