Transmission Swap/replacement

Hello all,

2010 Chevy Cobalt 2.2 Auto

100K miles on it

I recently had my transmission go out in my car. I can put the car in reverse and drive both of which I get no reaction. While in park the car can still be pushed like it were in neutral. Up to the point when I lost my drivetrain, I heard a grinding noise that many swore was a wheel bearing. Well here I am asking for tips, tricks, and tutorials about swapping/ replacing the transmission. I have a local salvage yard that allows me to go and remove a transmission from a junk car. I can purchase a warranty on what I remove. I am looking to see if there are any other GM vehicles that I can pull a transmission from that are compatible. The lot has 3 cobalts now but I have no indication as to what transmission they have (auto or manual) or if the transmission is any good or if the 2005 trans would fit the 2010 trans. permitting both are 2.2 with auto trans.
I plan to go take a look at what they have available the sucky part is that I have to remove it and have no way of knowing if it is good or bad....

Any help or advice is appreicated

I guess I am not sure what you mean by axles. The CV joint (half shafts?) I apologize I am not super savy in cars, yet.

If this is what you speak of I think those are solid. I just replaced the passenger side thinking that was the problem initially.

Half shafts yes, it has a CV joint on one end and a tripod joint on the other, tripod is on the transmission side and very rarely break but CV joints are under a lot of stress and these wear and often break leaving you stranded . Even if transmission is engaged you are going no where and putting it in park will leave like you were in neutral. The noise you heard when putting transmission in park is the park pin trying to engage in one of the flywheel holes.
