ECM Replacement + O2 Sensor on 2008 Cobalt

Hey everyone,

My dad has a 2008 Cobalt and it has had a rotten egg/sulfur smell and has been getting poor gas mileage. He brought it to a local shop and at first they said it was the catalytic converter + O2 sensor and that they would charge around $700 for it. But after looking it more thoroughly they called him and said it was his engine control module and one of the O2 sensors. But they're still charging $680 for it all, parts and labor. Is $680 a fair price for replacing the ECU and an O2 sensor? The ECU is right there in front of the fuse box, so it shouldn't take long to install. We don't know if it's new or used ECU because the guy didn't specify on the phone. We are going to go pick it up tomorrow morning, so I'm gonna be asking the guy lots of questions.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? Another shop we talked to said that was a bit high.

He called my dad back. It turns out he put a used ECM in, and didn't replace the O2 sensor because it apparently didn't need to be done but fixed an "electrical issue". This is crazy that it costed $680. I'll find out exactly what this "electrical issue" was tomorrow.

And the PCM was probably not the problem to begin with....FYI, In an 05-06 Cobalt it is called a PCM since there's a separate ignition module. GM integrated the two in 07-up and called it an ECM from then on.
