Driver's Door Inside Handle Won't Open Door

Really? I've had 14 cars (daily drivers) and three 50-year-old collector cars, and none have done this...until my '08 Cobalt.

I will be contacting NHTSA shortly. This is crazy.

Anybody have an idea about what this costs? My car has no power windows or power door locks. Thanks.

Nothing if it's just the rod that disconnected, nothing if it's the latch, you just need to soak it in varsol and re-lubricate.

This definitely is not something the NHTSA will see as a safety defect. It can happen to any car.

I can't open the passenger door on my Cavalier without pulling on the lock - it's probably a combination of age/mileage (214k when we bought it) and teenagers being stupid causing it to break.

As Coby said, it's probably just the rod in the door.

I did buy the car new.

The (manual) door lock buttons go up and down as normal, and the operation from the outside handle is as normal too. The interior handle is no longer flush with the escutcheon and is sticking out a bit. It's as if it's broken/disconnected.

If it's not sitting flush, then it sounds like the rod came out, and is preventing it from sitting where it should.
