Engine Won't Turn Over. (Sound file included)

Howdy,

Got back from a week long vacation and when I tried to start my car I had trouble. The first time it started right up but then died out after a couple seconds. Since that, it now won't actually turn over (if that's the right term). It just keeps making the sound like it's trying to get the engine to start but it just doesn't actually go. I have a full tank of gas so at least it's not that...

I took a recording of what it sounds like and you can listen to it here:

(click No, Thanks at the bottom of the sign up window)

Let me know if anyone has any ideas as to what the problem might be.

Thanks!!

Did you check the fuel pump fuse or listen if you could hear it run?

I don't know how to tell if the fuse is bad since it's not clear, but when I turn the key to the On position I do hear what sounds like the fuel pump priming. If I hold the key to the start location it sometimes sounds like it's about to rev up but never quite gets there.

Try tapping the starter! Had my cobalt sitting for almost a year, wouldn't turn over just kept clicking. Took a screwdriver and gave the starter a few solid taps, started right up.

Well, once I figured out where the starter was, I went out and smacked it with a screwdriver. I didn't have a good angle since the car was on the ground and it didn't feel like I was having any effect. However, I tried to start it again and after holding the key forward for a while it eventually did start.

I drove it around the block and then turned it off and was able to start it back up.

I guess I'll check it in the morning and hope it starts again.

Thanks.

Could be just a bad connection on the starter. My old truck had a starter installed and a year later had the issues you described. I cleaned the connections and hooked it up. The truck fired right up!

If smacking on the starter helps it start, you might want to replace it or take it apart and examine/clean it. Might be getting tired.
