2006 Cobalt Instrument Cluster

I have a 2006 Cobalt LS 5 spd coupe that will be my daughters car. The instrument cluster was working fine when we got it. It has been sitting and I have been working on it. The previous owner along the way replaced the factory radio with a Sony head unit. When doing so, they cut off the factory harness plug and did a hack job of wiring. I fixed it properly and made it so it shuts off with the key. Anyway while working on the radio i noticed that the mileage would disappear and (lines like this----------) would come across where the mileage and info center are. Yesterday I moved it out of the garage. I left the car run while I cleaned and moved around my other vehicles. When I started to move the car, The tach, speedo, and fuel gauge quit working and the lines showed up again. If you shut off the car and turn it back on, those items do not come back up. But, I unhooked the battery and they work just fine. Is the instrument cluster going bad? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
