Hearing a Little Popping Noise in the Steering Column

Hey everyone...I have an 08 cobalt LS with 114k on it....It has all new tires...but i have this wierd clinking noise in my steering column when parked...I can move the steering wheel slightly back and forth and hear/feel it...sometimes when going around 60mph i feel and hear it too...Is there some type of plastic shim in the steering wheel that wears out? I took it to the dealer and the alignment was perfect on it.....

Thanks for the help!!!

More than likely, if suspension is tight, you have a failing U-joint on the intermediate steering shaft. This joint is exposed the road grime and tends to rust out. Have somebody turn the steering side to side and look at the U-joint, it should not pop or jerk.

robbieholtz,

What did the dealership say when you brought it in for this concern? Did they get a chance to diagnose this concern or did they just check for the alignment?

Coby7,

I think your on to something...i turned the wheel all the way to the right and then moved the steering wheel slightly and could feel the play...but it seemed like i could feel the clinking in the steering link (not sure what its called) its by the steering shaft.

I didnt have the dealership look into the issue...as they wanted 100 just to look at it...it was just verbal...

I have the same problem, and I'm going to the ship this weekend.
I saved up enough problems, where paying 100 bucks isn't bad!
I was have clump sound when i turn my wheel
my A/C motor clicks and hums when I turn it on
and my windshield wiper motor just blew up yesterday,
I'll let you know what he says about the steering!

glad to hear it's under warranty
I don't know if this relates ,
but whenever i WOT my car pulls to the right.
I love going to dealer for 4-5 problems and getting them all fixed under warranty.
I'm going to bring up my antenna mount too, that is busted.
