Do NOT Purchase D2 Springs

Hey all, just got back from the shop and found nothing but problems with $120 springs that were purchased to lower my cobalt slightly. They claim it drops only 1.4" front when measured, dropped to 1.8", the rear springs, heh, lets just say I went back to stock for safety concerns. The rear ones were shy of 2" of clearing to the top piece and from hitting a large bump can possibly knock off the spring completely off.

I already feel from the front end, the struts are leaking from the get go (FE1). Come to find out, this outfit whom sells on ebay and amazon, takes the OEM spring, cuts it down or heat treats it, then powder coat the black springs to blue. This method was early 90s tricks of the trade before Sport Compact was the in thing.

I am already looking at ordering by Halloween all 4 FE5 struts and going with a Eibach Pro Kit, in which I have had no issues with eibach, they make the springs through a machine shop from scratch, so I know what im at least getting. I know it wont be much of a drop, but I am not trying to slam the car at all, just trying to give it a better handling vehicle without going to coilovers.

If you aren't in the market for the 'slammed' look, and you value handling over aesthetics, I'd highly recommend you look into Pedders springs. The drop is something like 1.5-1.6'', which is conservative by most measures, but the handling gain over stock springs with a fresh set of FE5 shocks is immeasurable. My car went from shopping cart to slot car, it's like night and day really. Also if I remember correctly, a set of 4 was about $320, so it won't put you in the poor house either. Very satisfied with Pedders and their product.

you put coilovers on a less than 20k car? the least car I would buy is an evo with coilovers, but to each their own... coilovers are money rapers IMO. granted you never need shocks/struts ever again, but how much are you losing in a car that will never resell for how much you put into it.

I may go with Plain Jane's idea though, shocks/struts for a 10k car is optional

10K? I wish my car was worth 10K lol. Mods don't do much for boosting the value of a car, it usually has the opposite effect. That being said, financially speaking anyways, my car is a total loss. I must have invested somewhere around 100% of its resale in modifications. But the way I see it, even 100% of a small number (in this case, dollars) is still a small number, so I'm not bothered about it.

Good luck with whatever path you decide to take, you know 'ol PJ's route has at least one pot of gold at the end of it
