I love these wheels, and have been drooling over them for a long time. My question is if they would fit well on my 4 lug base model. Looking at the 17'' model.

At only 17x7 I wouldn't want to spend that much money.

Yeah, it's a bit steep. What I want to know is if the wheels would poke out of the fenders, would I need centric rings, etc. I don't know much about wheels, but I know what I like.

I'm mainly saying since it's only a 7 inch wide wheel don'g bother. Those are the same size as my winter wheels. You probably would need centric rings and it wouldn't poke.

What's the widest I could go? I imagine the wider the tire, the bigger the contact patch, the better the handling/accelerating/braking characteristics of the car.

Yep generally. My better set of wheels are 18x8 PF01's. I have a 235/40/18 summer tire on them. The widest you should go on those wheels would be 225/45/17 which is what size tire is on my winter wheels. They handle nice but the less the tire is wider than the wheel the better.
