For instance the Michelin Defenders I just bought which is a summer tire have a treadwear number of 820 which means I should be a lot older before they wear out.

looks like 440 or 490. Not too good im guessing. But for 58$ a tire they aren't a bad deal.

They are what they are a reasonnably good priced all season which is not very good in harsh winter and not very good in mid summer. You get what you pay for. A good spring and fall tire I guess.

Are they second hand at that price? Shoot I paid 145$ for my Michelins, I got robbed or you're getting a real good deal. Is that the final price after balancing, valves and installation plus taxes?

Mine came to $673 Cdn total for 4.

This. I always say that even the most expensive A/S tire is mediocre year round. A little bit exaggerated, of course, but there is a distinct difference in the rubber compound in summer and winter tires. If you're less focused on performance (less power and/or not a spirited driver) the summer tire becomes less important.

Talk about tread wear ratings, I ran these for a summer 2 years ago. Awesome tire, lasted about 6,000 miles and I now use these only for the road track

what are you putting 14 inch tires on? The base cobalt has 15 inch, there are 16 inch GM accessory rims, then you have 17s and 18s on the SSs...

My wifes aveo has 14 in wheels though...

Tire specs? Seems to be the better of the crap tires. What do you want it to do, handle somewhat well and for use all year round?
