Pretty simple, support engine and tranny and about 16 bolts later remove and replace sub frame. I will try to find the GM maintenance manual info for you.

My subframe was removed, when i couldn't get out the TCABs. The rack was left attached to the steering knuckles. Just used a long drive extension and took rack bolts from the top.

I believe it is the same for all Cobalts, G5,Pursuit and saturn ION.

GM# 15918781 (#27) seen here on ebay for description purposes only. Don't pay that amount for it. You should be able to find a good one at a junkyard for less than $200.

Looks like I gotta drop my sub-frame too (the bolt holding the right rear control arm bushing is not turning out). Thanks for the instructions Coby7. What I am not clear on is how to brace the engine/tranny (above or below?) and how to remove the sub-frame (will I need to get a custom jack, or can I just use a normal floor jack with a long piece of wood on it or something.

Don't think you need to drop sub-frame for that nut, if you know somebody who can weld it in place then you can undo the bolt while the nut is still hot from the weld.
