Caliper Guide Pin Rubber Bushing

Just wondering.....what is the purpose of the rubber bushing on the front caliper guide pins(it fills the gap at the far end of the pin). And what happens if is damaged and you do not replace it with a new one ?

As far as I know, it's to keep it clean so brake pad replacement jobs are easy. Surely it's not an expensive part and worth replacing if it's damaged.
