Unusual Shifter Behavior

Girlfriend's car is an 05 LS Automatic.

We've noticed one (two) things unusual about the car related to the shifter:

1. The car no longer locks/unlocks automatically based on shifter/key position.
2. (pretty sure this isn't normal) Interlock solenoid can be heard clicking once per brake press regardless of shifter position (confirmed all positions - PRNDIL shifter)

Things that still operate normally:
Car starts, runs, drives normally
Key releases only and always in P
button on shift knob is required only and always for P-R, R-P, and D-I shifts
brake is required for P-R shift.
Reverse lighting only and always on in R with key on run.

Any idea where I should start looking? Should I be worried about imminent safety/usability problems with the park interlock system?

There was a recall on the shifter, check with dealer to see if it was done.
