Car had chain noise on startup, so I decided to replace the tensioner. This was straightforward, until I took the old one out. It had come apart, and when the housing and spring were removed, the piston appears to have fallen. From what I've seen of this...

... which has what I suspect is chain noise: 'tinkling' after a cold start, that goes away after about a minute. (It also has a bad water pump, which is noisy with a listening stick. But, the water pump noise doesn't sound like the 'tinkling', IMO.)
