05 cobalt automatic, key stays in ignition.i messed with the brake pedal shifted P to 1 back & worth ignition on & off.I 've check Park pin cleaned inside console no dirt dust or sticking. This is a common problem anyone know how to fix it?? eventually something clicks. I know about the override switch under the steering column to get the key released. I want to fix it correctly. GM tells me to replace the shifter assembly. They should replace it ,if it is a defect. I have 2 cobalts & they both do it periodically. I cant figure out what to replace and spending a lot of cash on guessing isn't my way of doing things! Thanks, Mitch

Did you check for a broken wire? Did you check the switch for continuity? Also if your battery post connectors get loose or dirty for some reason this will also stop your key from coming out.

Just wanted to let you know that this happened to me twice right after I got the car. The dealer fixed it both times for free under waranty. Then they had a recall earlier this year for the ignition switch. Also you would like to know that this past week my battery went dead over night and when I put the key in the ignition I could not get it out til I had power in the car. Makes a whole lot of sense seeing as how the battery is in the trunk and if key is in ignition and car is dead no way to get in trunk. I did also know about the jump post under the hood of the car.

To pull key out when battery is dead just open flap under ignition barrel and press little button.
