What year is the 2.4 block and what year is the 2.2 head?
the definitive answer is yes, no, and possibly.
09 uses both a 2.2 and a 2.4 but as I recall they had dual variable cam phasers 07-08 only had one.
2.4 depend year ( I could be wrong on this) had 2 different crank position reluctor rings.
What engine did your 09 cobalt come with!

I just did my swap a couple months ago 08 Chevy hhr 2.2 original I pick up a 09 2.4 out of a hhr with 60,000 miles on it that was rear ended pulled the 2.4 head off and replacing it with a 2.2 head that have been decked. The machine shop said that I may have to high of compression. But I'm going to go for it anyway and sofar no problems runs great and seem to be a little pepper them before. So sofar so good.
It was a 09 so it came with vvt head with the two on the head my 08 didn't have it so I swapped to the 08 head so everything would work right sofar so good with no problem
