Hey guys, recently my cobalt has been slow to start and sluggish so I figured I'd replace the fuel filter. (I know it hasn't been replaced since I got the car at 80k and it now has 115k) I thought I knew what I was doing but I guess not :embarrest: I put the car on ramps. Pulled the fuel pump relay and let the car stall. I thought that's how you depressurize the fuel system but when I removed the first line fuel shot out, gas got all over me so I just reattached the fuel line and went took a shower and now I'm here. :laugh2: Another problem is the line that requires a removal tool appears to be rusted to the filter is there any good way of getting that off? Is there another way to depressurize the system that I don't know of? Thanks in advance for any replies, I appreciate it.

Welcome! That's how I usually depressurize the fuel system. Maybe crank the engine for a bit to try to relieve more pressure? There is a "wrench like" tool you can get from Autozone or Advance Auto that goes over the fuel line and you push it into the filter connection that releases the line from the filter. It can be a pain, especially when there's corrosion around the fitting. While pushing the tool into the fitting, try to twist the filter back and forth to work the tool in.
I'm not sure where you're from, but I am having the same issue as you. For me, I discovered a fuel leak right in the line by the driver's side rear wheel. The fuel lines are corroded causing a fuel leak which only happens when the fuel line is pressurized. I only noticed it when I got home last night and smelled raw fuel. It will stop leaking once the pressure goes down, but is enough to cause long starting and hesitation.

Just did this today take off the two lines on the right side with blue buttons they're fairly easy gas will come out but only a few ounces and it will stop try to twist the filter back and forth to break it Loose from the corrosion the more you do it the easier it will be use the tool to push the plastic clip in so that it releases and remove the filter the clip looks like this

Next if the new filter has 4 metal tangs on the inside like this one you will not need the plastic clip just clean off the corrosion as best you can with a wire brush or Emery cloth
