2009 Cobalt Intermittent Start then stalling

Hello, I am Haley.

I have a 2009 Chevy Cobalt LS 5 speed 2.2L, recently I went to leave work and the car stalled twice and would not re-fire. Never had any issues before. 140K miles.

Trying to start the car, it intermittently primes the fuel pump, starts then stalls out. When it dies the screen reads Low fuel, power steering.

Cluster will spike up sometimes like it wants to start but wont (MPH spikes up to 20 then cuts off, no other gauges come on, fuel pump not priming, no start), then a few more cycles of the key off to run the fuel pump kicks on and cluster reads (All gauges cycle on) , then car fires up for a few seconds at idle and then stalls out.

I have changed the Mass air flow sensor, ignition starter switch and swapped fuel pump relay with my A/C relay and still doing the intermittent starting and then stalling. Also put a fuel pressure gauge on and read 42psi not running, then steady 60psi when I could get the car to fire, stalls out few seconds after running at idle or hitting accelerator.

Feeling your pain. My Cobalt has done all of that. 08 auto. Anyhow, these problems are common with this car. What i found was the two ground connections are a cure all for anything electrical. YouTube cobalt grounds under hood. Take them apart. Clean them up using new new connectors. You may have to have somebody clear all the codes. Once i did this, i haven’t had a lick of trouble (knock on wood) with the car. (Except the heater blend door connector break. Did a repair based on info from this site. Hope it works. Waiting for the glue to dry.
It sounds like an intermittent failing fuel pump. I had a 2008 chevy cobalt that ran until about 185k before it got totalled in an accident. I really didn't have issues with it (in regards to engine and electrical problems that is) besides a few minor things. I changed the fuel filter and spark plugs around 100k. Have you changed the fuel filter yet?

I forget how the Cobalt works but if you have a turn key ignition, can you turn it just enough to hear if the fuel pump kicks on? I had a failing pump on another car and it would sometimes start, sometimes not depending on how hot the fuel pump was. If you turned the key to just before starting it, you could hear the fuel pump start up (when it did)..

Are there any stored codes?

That is what I'm gonna try next! Chase some wires and make sure everything is together then start chasing grounds!

The pump will kick on once every 5 or 6 cycles of the key, I hot wired the fuel pump and it is coming on! When I hook up a scanner it reads link failed so I'm leaning towards ground or electrical wire somewhere!

I appreciate it and I’ll be getting to that this weekend. Thank you for the advice

I haven’t really bothered to listen for the fuel pump but I do have plans this weekend to put a new one in and change the filter as well. It doesn’t have any stored codes but the codes it’s throwing has to do with the timing cause I’ve already changed all the sensors. I’ll keep everyone updated. When I try and start it it’s like it ain’t getting fuel and sometimes it sounds like the timing is jumping and at times it’ll start just right and run.
