2010 Cobalt LS, 2.2L, automagic transmission :)cheesy:) and only 96.000 KM...

Yesterday without any reason when I was arriving in my home driveway... my car begin to have a very rough idle/low RPM like if I have misfire on a cylinder, but if I increase the throttle the problem is barely visible. I left it run on bad idle for a few minutes (while I was looking to find trouble) and still no CEL light but I smell a bad rotten egg smell coming from my car???

I finally decided to turn engine off, wait a few secondes then start it again. It been pretty hard to start it, but it finally started and after like 2-3 seconds of rough idle, it finally return to a normal idle and worked fine the rest of the day...

Well, I'm usually comfortable to find my car problems, but I need to have a CEL light to point me on some direction... I already looked at all obvious thing such as good oil level, good cooling level, no visible problem in the engine bay, etc.

Any suggestions?

You may have a bad cam actuator that sticks, it will eventually give you a code..

I justly replaced the intake cam actuator recently (GM part from the dealer) because I had the CEL code for it. It was 6 months ago. So maybe the other cam actuator (exhaust side)??

You are right as the symptoms are pretty similar to when my intake cam actuator died 6 months ago, except the last time the CEL light immediately...

Yup! Mobil1 Full Synthetic 5w30 since 0 KM up to now, never changed once of an oil brand/type. Always followed the oil life indicator, which give my around 11-12,000 KM between oil changes. I also use long life synthetic filter as well.

Coby7, so what about the synthetic oil? What is your concern/comment about it? I am still awaiting your follow up... LOL :cheesy:

By the way I done some serious mileage with the car last week (been on vacation and drive a lot) and no more sign of any trouble yet... touching wood!!

But I am still curious about your question regarding my oil type... :nuts:

Manufacturer suggest using Synthetic because dinosaur oil will sludge and cam actuators don't like sludge. If you read in the manual it also says to change the filter at 3000 miles or 5000K even if you use synthetic. It's kind of ambiguous bwcause it says to change oil and filter when using standard oil at 3000 miles but makes no reference of it being different when Using synthetic. So I change my filter half way through the oil period when using synthetic.

Okay, fine :)

Well I also use the premium Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters which is 15,000 KM (9000 miles) warranty for maximum filtering power. Which is about the same price as the factory filter if you purchase from the dealer... factory Goodwrench is like 12$ (CDN$) from the dealer and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filter is like 16$ (CDN$) but you don't have to mess replacing the filter in the middle of the oil change interval.

My oil life indicator prompt for oil change between 11,000 to 12,000 KM and the Mobil 1 Extended Performance Oil Filters is certified for 15,000 KM so we are all set! :)
