After some pretty major issues with my car (stalling out, shaking, over the course of about 4 months) my mechanic thinks that my computer is going to crap. Anyone know the cost of a new computer? (06 Balt LT 2.2) I'm going to drive the car around for a while (only put 12-15 miles on it a day) while I save the money for a new puter, but just curious how much I'm looking at. Thanks!!

*I'm looking for just the price of the part. My hubby and I can figure out the labor part of it. Thanks!

One from a salvage vehicle should be rather cheap. If you go junkyard hunting, you should be able to find one. You do have to make sure the pcms match since there were some differences between certain years.

Yeah, I'm not all about junkyards... I've gotten window regulators and stuff out of them before that just went to junk again a few months later. Now if it were a quarter panel or something (and assuming that my hubby weren't a body guy that can get new aftermarket body parts cheaper than what he can in a junk yard), then yeah, but with electronics, I'm just not quite thrilled about the idea. Plus with my luck I'd be putting a computer in my 63xxx mile car that came out of a 120xxx mile car. :)

And when I said window regulators and stuff, I mean for past vehicles...

As far as window regulators go, you should always buy new ones (usually aftermarket)... especially with GM vehicles since the OEM ones tend to burn out quickly.

The PCM is usually always never an issue from junkers, provided that they were not damaged in the impact. If you're going for engine components, try to find the cars that either were junked due to body issues, or totaled due to a rear-end hit. The PCMs are rather well sealed against the weather, so they don't sustain the issues from being out in the elements, since the engine bay is a harsh environment to begin with. As far as mileage, the yard usually keeps records on the vehicles, so just ask them to look it up. Alternatively, if you use eBay to buy from an auto recycler (Such as LKQ), they'll provide the information about the car it was pulled from. Recycled auto parts are a pretty good way to get parts for cheap if you know what to look for.

What about the ECM? We're not 100% sure which one needs replaced since it hasn't been into the shop yet, but the hubby is "thinking" it's the ecm one.....? (Like where to look for it.)

When I say PCM, basically I'm talking about the ECM. Just a bad habit from my Grand Am days.

The Cobalt has two main computers for the powertrain, the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Transmission Control Module if you have an automatic trans (TCM).

The ECM on the Cobalt is directly in front of the fuse box in the engine compartment. There is a little cover over it that you can pull off, which will expose the ECM. The 2006 should be the 16bit version, with two connectors on it. The 2007+ will have 3 connectors and is 32 bit, making it incompatable with the 2005/2006 cars.

When you change the ECM on the Cobalt, you will need to have the dealership perform a CASE learn.

Update:

Turned out not to be the ECM after all! Just a bad coil pack. My car FINALLY threw a code, and she's in the shop as I type. Turns out the new throttle body did actually do what it needed, but apparently the throttle body and coil pack just both needed replaced.

this note is for anyone thinking of replacing one of the computers in their cobalt.
these computers (all 3 of them) have an 8 year warranty on them,its an emissions regulation.so if you're sure you need one get it done under warranty!!!

Are you sure about this warranty thing? I've seen many posts on this site and on Edmunds. Everyone seems to be paying for new modules and complaining. Is this some sort of GM secret?

REALLY??? Hmm. Interesting!!

It's been a few months, and I'm still getting the misfiring. It's on ALL 4 cylinders now though. Since the coil pack replacement, I've replaced the fuel injectors AND even changed the plugs again AC Delcos this time, at the recommendation of my mechanic. She was FINE for a little over a week, but then started missing again. :-( Thank goodness it's summer and not cold enough to make her stall on me, but it's still a bad enough miss that it sometimes shakes my entire vehicle unless I stick her in neutral!

NM. Found it. ECMs only covered for 2 years. Only things covered for 8 are the Catalytic Converter, the Emissions Control Unit (ECU), and the OBD.

This info is listed in the warranty book that came with the car,not the owners manual the other thinner one.I re-read it and yes it is an emissions item, 8 years.

i have the manual infront of me as i write this.It lists ECM,PCM and VCM,cat converter,TCM with an asterisk---"Specified Major Emission Components: 8 years/130,000 km,whichever comes first." from page 32 of the manual.

Hmm....Again, interesting. I don't have the original warranty book, unfortunately. (Bought her used, and it was a rental before me, so I'm sure it's long gone.) Might be able to find a PDF of it somewhere on the net though, or I might have to check with my local dealer. Still fighting this problem. She's running ok, just not right. (Still misfiring, but not to the point where it stalls, and she only shakes about once every few weeks.) It's nothing that's impairing my daily driving, but I'm not too keen on the idea of taking her more than a half hour trip from home...
