The captive nut on my daughters 2006 chevy cobalt passenger side lower control arm is just spinning! I've tried jamming everything under the sun along side what feels like a rectangular nut spinning around inside. Can i cut the head of the bolt off and push the bolt up thru the top of the sheet metal tower and replace it with a regular nut and bolt?

Try welding the nut in place...

There is very little access to this captive nut! I'm barely able to get my finger tips in to feel the top of the bolt spinning and the nut going around in the cage. I've stuck screw drivers in thru the side and some 3/8" stock and it just push's it up and the nut continues to spin!

Yup. I broke off the cage and put a 1" open ended (I think) wrench on it it's not a hexnut it's a rectangular piece of steel
