Ok, so here's the deal:

i have a 1992 Chevrolet Corsica, everyone knows about it already.
i also have a Toshiba Satellite laptop that's been long dead, running windows 98

I am going to take this weekend, and figure out a way to merge the two, but still keep the laptop removable, so i can interchange vehicles.

I will be doing this at a friend's work, and he has a few video cameras, so i may do a how-to Video on this for those people with old POC laptops.

What i am asking for is feedback as to where you think it should be positioned, cause i can attach it on the passenger side where the pull out cup holders are(in the dash), or should i construct a mount so the driver has sole access to it????



****NOTE: my car only has Driver's side airbags, so it's legitimate to do it on the passenger side without interferrence****

Carputers arnt as hard as i thought. My buddy has one in his lincon continetal, and he used an actual computer instead of a laptop. Laptops are MUCH eaiser, but anyway, what he did was istall and mount all th hardware from his computer in the glove box and behind it'in footwell. Itscompletly hidden, then all you ave to do is run a video cable from the mother board to the touchscreen in dash. and there youhave it, carputer.

me on the other hand, am hard wiring a laptop computer into my car, but making it easily removable so i can toss it into other vehicles too, i'm just using one of my old laptops i had lying around

Cobaltkrazy I have a Dell laptop id like to wire into my 2008 to get the diagnostics and live-info as I drive. How do you go about doing this? To OP: I'd say make a custom mount for it kinda like police vehicles use mounted on the floorboard on a stand. It's a smooth setup that also protects the laptop against un-wanted movement. I think thatd be the best bet.

Ok, here's some info:

If you dont want to destroy the integrity of your laptop, my suggestion is make use of the fun device called a "Power Inverter". Makes for smooth connections and such. If you are tuning your car, you will need a Tuning kit, it will quite often come with the software disc and cables to hook your laptop to your car, then you just place it in the passenger seat while tuning. For diagnostic and live info, your best bet is to pick up a particular device that acts as a diagnostic reader, that plugs into your laptop. Last time i saw one of those was when i worked for GM, and they had it from Snap-On.

Me, i'm working with an old laptop, the power adapter doesnt work, so i'm hard wiring it to my battery. I will also carve out the hole for the computer in my passenger side dash, and create a fiberglass box for it, cause it will be used for on-road web browsing by the passenger, and GPS/maps when needed. It will double as entertainment for drunk people too.

**NOTE: my car DOES NOT come with factory SRS airbags on the passenger side, only the driver's side. Vehicle set-up will be different for each vehicle**

You might want to look for the voltage spefication for your laptop. I know the alternator only puts out something like 13-15VDC and some laptops require 19VDC. Just something to look out for, hate to see a fried laptop.

it's an older laptop, and it will be running directly off the battery, separate circuit altogether from the alternator

i am throwing a 10 amp fuse in that circuit, which will keep from frying the laptop

Is the battery the main auto battery or a separate one? And if it is the main car battery, wouldn't the alternator be charging the battery as long as the engine is running? Maybe Im the confused one. LOL

yes, it's the main battery for the car, but it's a small battery(being upgraded in a couple days).

and yes, when the car is running, it charges the battery via the alternator, but it has to put in a certain amount of voltage/amperage, cause any different, and you will either fry your battery, or it wont charge enough to start again

the circuit isnt connected to the alternator, it's separate from it. It will just be like running your amp for your stereo, totally separate circuit.
