I'm a student at Lehigh University who is working on a design project with GM. Our mission is to redesign the Cobalt's cupholders, and we need your input.

Please take a minute to answer a few questions, and maybe you'll see your ideas implemented in the '09 Cobalt.

1. What is the best location for a cup holder?
a. in front of the shifter (current location)
b. next to the emergency brake
c. in the air (e.g. from the dashboard)
d. other (please specify):

2. Should the cup holder have the ability to be hidden? Yes No

3. If the cup holder is hidden, what is the best way to hide it?
a. cover with a sliding door
b. cover with a hinged door
c. put in dashboard
d. other (please specify):

4. Should the cup holders for the back seat be moved? Yes No

5. Should the cup holder have the ability to heat and/or cool?
a. heat
b. cool
c. both
d. no preference

6. Should the cup holder be adjustable? Yes No

7. Would you be willing to adjust the holder yourself, or should it be self-adjusting?
a. you adjust
b. self-adjusting
c. no preference

Any additional comments or suggestions? Thank you for your input.

1. What is the best location for a cup holder?
a. in front of the shifter (current location) BUT FURTHER BACK FROM THE DASH Maybe 2-3inches

2. Should the cup holder have the ability to be hidden? Not a big deal, but sure why not?

3. If the cup holder is hidden, what is the best way to hide it?
d. other (please specify): Put down in the door where the current pocket is, but give more space for a cup/bottle

4. Should the cup holders for the back seat be moved? No -but shoule be enlarged a size or two

5. Should the cup holder have the ability to heat and/or cool?
c. both

6. Should the cup holder be adjustable? Yes

7. Would you be willing to adjust the holder yourself, or should it be self-adjusting?
c. no preference

Any additional comments or suggestions?
- This all seems like a good idea, but i believe the reason the cobalt doesn't have nifty cup holders is due to the cost matter. Editing matters like these would make the car luxorious thus increasing the overall price. But i wouldn't mind seeing some changes.

I wouldn't mind seeing the E-brake or console moved so the e-brake isn't directly underneath. But i guess thats the downfall to getting the free console.

i will answer all questions with one answer, i like the cup holder where it is now, and how it is.

you go to hear and cool the thing, and it will make it alot harder to remove that piece of trim for people trying to mod.

not to mention the extra wires and crap, more draw on the battery, bigger alternator, less room under the hood.

i agree with just miller on the back cup holders though, and that annoying center console armrest makes trying to drift race the car nearly impossible.

the cup holder is great. My only complaint is that I don't like it how it doesn't hold water bottles.....
you mean those really thin bottles? cause i get my water bottles in there quite nicely..........i even put cans of pop in there

I usually get the aquafina water bottles, and the cupholders just don't do. They fit...but they don't go down enough for it be fully held. I do one turn and the bottle just falls out of the cup holder.

So now, I just put water battles in between my legs.

try sticking it between the e-brake handle and the seat, it fits perfect there

Two comments on the cup holder. When I have my iPod plugged in, the left hand cup holder is useless. If I get the 44oz slurpee cup from the gas station, it doesn't sit in there very well. The larger dimension part of the cup is interfered with by the climate control dials. Those are the only complaints I can think of.

Awesome design project, is that a capstone or an underclass project?

I myself would like to see the front cupholders moved back or something, so I can use the climate control when i have something there. The back holders, I would like to see them a little deeper, and maybe have them along the side panels instead of the center console.
