Have an 2007 Cobalt 2.2 that is stuck in park. This has happened previously, and the culprit was a blown fuse in the passenger footwell fuse block. I don't remember exactly which fuse was blown last time, but this time the one blown was #9, a 10A fuse for the brake lamp circuit. Any attempt to insert a new one just results in it blowing the moment the contacts touch the terminal. At this point, I have replaced both brake light bulbs AND the switch at the top of the brake pedal, and inspected the wiring to the extent that it can be readily seen, all with no effect on the short (wherever it is).

This issue occurred spontaneously without any other related (or even suspicious) issues leading up to it. The car was running fine the previous night.

Any ideas?

If it burns before you even press the pedal, this means the red with white stripe wire that leaves pin "E1" on "C4" (driver's side of BCM) that goes to the brake switch is touching ground somewhere. It is only 1.4 meters long so you should be able to trace it and verify that it isn't frayed along it's route.

Just wanted to say thanks, Coby.....it took me quite a while to get back to this project, and even more time to find the short, but it involved exactly the wire you predicted. The wiring harness was pinched behind one corner of the BCM, and 170,000+ miles of pressure and friction had finally worn the wire through.

Thank goodness it was in a fairly accessible location.....inspecting all of that wire's 1.5 meter length would have been a lot more challenging. As it was, it was an easy fix once I found the short. I've rerouted the harness away from that particular pinch point, so there shouldn't be any repeats.
