Was browsing the net bout a week back looking for LED strips to mount somewhere in my car, but in my nature im something of a "tinkerer," so i went on eBay and bought 100 LED's for like 6 bucks and decided to make something all my own.

So while painting my trim, still one more coat of white and then clear coat to go, i thought it be cool if i mounted them under the trim to shine a line of light along the edge.

And after about 10 hours of soldering, hot gluing, and wiring my project is done.

Behold, lol:



I started by drilling holes in the left and right steering column trim pieces and the glove box trim piece, at about one LED every inch.



Then preceded to hot glue each LED into place. Easy so far.



Next I bent the leads of the LED's (due to their close proximity of each other) next to each other and soldered the positive and negative leads of each LED into groups of 4.

12 volts from battery / 4 LED's = 3 volts per LED (as recommended for the LED's i purchased)



Next comes the soldering of each series, into a parallel circuit for each panel as i call it. This crude drawing shows the basics of soldering the LED for my lighting:



The first way i soldered this was quick but certainly not "efficient" lol:



I soon after modified the parallel circuit so there was one common positive and negative wire that each series of 4 LEDs "tapped" into. Reduced the wires from 12 to 2:



So after each panel is wired, the fun part is puttin this inside your balt. First rather than tap into the power for the radio or some other interior peripheral, I decided to tap into the power by the fuse box:



Then fed the wire through the firewall into the drivers side floor board:



Next is to decide where the switch for your lights is going to be placed, i chose the pull down box near the steering wheel. Simple toggle switch:



Now connect the wire from the terminal by the fuse box to the positive side of the switch, then wire the other end to the first positive lead on the panel of LED's, then in succession with each panel. This is simplified quite a bit, but im sure most of you get the idea. Next is to ground the circuit to the metal frame of the car. Easiest was was to a metal piece behind the steering wheel:



Then just wire the negative of each panel in parallel to the ground and you're in business. Last thing to do is to organize the wires, snap in the trim pieces, and hit the switch, then jizz in your pants.




This is my real first post on this forum and i figured i would make it a good one. I'm sure this might get moved to the DIY section, but considering its interior styling related i figured i could post it here.

If anyone thinks this was a good waste of my time, lol, please leave a comment.

thanks, i have a new idea involving LED's, plastic tubing, and water. Create something like a solid beam of light....

i gotta say i'm not really the biggest fan of lighting mods but that really does look sick very nice thinking. completely custom

that truly looks sick and you spent some serious time modding that making it custom makes my work look silly definitely a good start man

Wow! that really looks pretty good! I don't like interior lighting much, but that is very original!

If you would like me to move this to the how-to section i will. But if not thats fine.

up to you man, im fine either way if u move it

My new project is gonna be about 25 feet longer (thats what she said), involve the implementation of an aquarium pump, water, and 102 leds, and encompass most of the floor in my balt =)
