I had a stock front speaker go out on me once. I am still under warranty so it was replaced for free, but some wiring problem made it blow. (they're really crappy speakers). I'm not sure if thats your problem sense your HU is messing up too. but I'd look into replacing it (you can get a realllly cheap replacement at like autozone or maybe even someone on here swapped theirs for aftermarket looking to sell)

good luck!

It's not an uncommon problem for stock front speakers to blow. Mine did after about a year and a half. If you really want to be sure it's the speaker and not a wiring issue, move the passenger speaker to the driver side. If it works, just replace the front speakers.

If you wire the speakers yourself, you'll lose the door chimes/etc... The easiest thing to do is buy wiring harnesses from ebay, $10 for two harnesses, and that pretty much makes your speakers plug and play. I highly recommend the wiring harnesses.
Best and cheapest way to install new door speakers is to use this method: http://www.yourcobalt.com/forums/install-guides-diy/10310-diy-installing-aftermarket-door-speakers.html
However doing that requires 5.25", which is the size you have now... you can fit 6.5", you just need a new mount.

Yes, I have that problem, both of my front speakers are out. My driver side speaker went out a while back. I had bought some Alpines for the front and back, but I put them in my girlfriends car.
