Hi all,

I recently filled my 2005 Cobalt with half a tank of gas and I noticed the both the digital fuel gauge and analog one jumped to FULL. I drove for a half the day and the readings did not change. I decided to full up the car and drive for a few more days to see what happens and the fuel gauge still reads as full.

Any ideas of what this could be?

I did have my starter changed by a new mechanic I tried out early in the week, since mine retired. Could it be a loose wire or fuse that is effecting the fuel gauge?

Sending unit quite possibly or a pinched wire.

Have you every replaced a sending unit?

I called GM and they told me they have to drop the tank and it will take approx 3 hours labour plus the part.

is it that hard of a hard fix?

Yes you do have to drop the tank, so preferably close to empty when you get it done. Firstly you should make sure it is the sending unit and secondly you don't need to take it to the dealer, any small garage can do this and any small garage should be able to diagnose this for you.

When you say digital gauge, did you add one or was it stock for your year and model?

You could also ask your last mechanic to check if he accidentally unhooked something in the starter changing process.

Its the stock gauge. Its a 2005 Cobalt.

The thing is I went to new mechanic so I am 50/50 on going back since my fuel gauge stopped working on the first refuel after my visit to him.

I will take you advice and find another local shop to assess the issue.

On this issue, I hit a pothole in April on my way through PA, and my fuel gauge now consistently reads 1/8th of a tank lower than it should. A fill up never results in a full gauge. I noticed on the highway in PA that the gauge was fluctuating a bit, so I shut the car off and restarted it. Since then, it has been 1/8th off. Should I focus on my sending unit? Is there an adjustment I can make? I'm not terribly concerned. I can live with it off, but if it were an easy fix, I would rather do that.
