I've had this problem for years now and there are no open recalls on this item. When I fill up the tank I always have a very strong gas smell coming from the tank for days/weeks and the top of the tank is moist. My normal mechanic has looked into it and verified it is an issue at the top of the tank and fits the description for the 2006 recall. I've had the dealership look at it while it was there for the ignition switch recall and he said there is no recall on the problem. Is there any way to get GM to roll in the 2005s into the 2006 recall for this problem? My mechanic says he can't find a new replacement tank for under $900 (about a year ago I had him look).

Is there any way I can fix this myself without spending more than the car is worth?
