So here's the back story. I bought the car in early 2008 when the new models came out. It was actually my first car purchase myself (although parents had to co-sign). I eventually got their name taken off of it, but it wasn't the best way to have it done.

In 2009 we had a massive hail storm which seems to hit every couple of years or so. My car was unfortunately outside during it, and was beat up pretty bad. The insurance company actually asked me for my purchase papers from the dealer, and I was extremely surprised what happened.

They wrote my car off, and basically gave me almost what I paid for it. I kept it, and had a couple hundred dollars left over.

Now it's 2013, and I am out of the 5yr/50k warranty that came with the car, and I am starting to really hate the lunar surface of my car. I know why they wrote it off, and I didn't care because it was brand new. However, I am wondering if it would be worth it to fix it. The problem I see, is that most of the panels on these cars are one solid piece. So the front quarter panel is attached to the little metal piece along the tops of the doors, and then to the back quarter panel.

That's probably why they wrote it off. The only side that is good, is the passenger side. It's not bad except for the top by the doors, but the rest of it is fine. How hard is it to do these fixes yourself? Do you just fill it with bondo or do you have to try to hammer out as much as possible before filling and re-sand/painting it?

I am not a mechanic by any means, but I'm just trying to find out how much actual work there is going to be to fix it.

Trunk and hood you can replace, roof you will have to pull the dents and then bondo.fenders and doors can either be replaced or repaired depending on damage.

I say repair or deal with it. Never drive a car into the ground. You'll wish you never did that. It may not look good, but as long as it drives, that's all that matters.

Personally, I wouldn't spend a lot of money for purely cosmetic repair on an 08.

I guess I don't know what the rules are when it comes to a vehicle being totaled out, but you could always buy a new car and part out the old one.

I guess for me it depends on the Model of the car. If it is an SS, by all means, repair it, if not, don't.

Your insurance won't cover it tho? Most people have comprehensive coverage for stuff like this.

I was also going to mention. A good paintless dent removal person can work miracles where there was no paint break. Might bring the cost down if you're dead set on repairing.

The insurance company wrote it off saying it wasn't worth it to fix it. So I basically paid the salvage fees, paid off what I owed on the car, and had a couple hundred left over. It wasn't enough to even think about getting it fixed.

Also when I say drive into the ground, I meant drive the car until it dies a natural death in like 30 years or whatever. :D

I've still got about 75-100 dents on my car from a hail storm a couple years ago. Insurance wasn't going to cover all the repairs, shop wanted close to $2k to fix it. Since the paint wasn't broken and most were on the hood I just said screw it and left it as is. I plan on painting it next year and I'll fix the dents myself then. Hail is common in the summer where I live so I don't expect it to be ever stay hail dent free.
