Anyone know if you can hardwire a GPS unit? I will be mounting a Garmin Nuvi 255 near the driver's side A pillar but I want the wiring to be hidden.

Also looking for the best way to run the wire under the dash and splice into the fuse panel. Must be hooked into the accessory fuse so the unit powers down with the key off.

Any ideas or words of wisdom before I start this project?

It must be able to be done, that is how the shops wire the in dash GPS units. Try to download a copy of an in dash GPD head unit and see how the manufacturers wire them.

dammit i HATE being without a camera cause i would show you how and where i ran the wires on my tomtom.

your saying you want it in the exact spot where teh SS's boost gauge is? thats where i have mine

oh forgot to mention.. all you would have to do is just tap into the back of your cig lighter, no need for a fuse tap

Yep! I don't know if I will alter the pillar trim, but I am going to hardwire it into the corner of the windshield at least. I think it will be cool to run it on the digital dash screen! (Displays compass, speedo and trip and speed data)

Well, got the car back today and got the GPS mounted near the inspection stickers. It sticks out right over the pillar! Looks like factory! Can't wait to show you, but I'm gonna get it hardwired first. Have to wait for Feb. 11th for the appointment...quoted $15 to do it. I could take a few pics running on battery only if you like?

If you pull gently and firmly, most of the plastic panels in the car pop off. You can then run your cable down through the dash and wire it to the cigarette lighter if you really want. I would just hide the cables and plug it in like normal. What happens if you want to move it to another car? You cant. Unless you put the socket back on, and then it'll jut look shitty.

Good info! I got this unit specifically for the Balt, I have a 255W for the other vehicle (not installed) so the 255 will stay in the Cobalt. I also want it to come on and off with the key switch so the lighter is out. It seems to stay on after the switch is off.

Here's a sucky 6am, snowy, dark pic showing the custom SS start up screen I made!

This one shows the compass and speed screen.

I'll get better pics later, been too busy to do anything else!

I got the 255 because it is a bit smaller than the 255W, so it seems to fit in the corner much nicer than the widescreen version.

Bonus:
Gratuitous night time stereo shot! (Just because it came out good! LOL)

I hope you didnt pay to have it mounted there. Dont pay to hardwire it in. Its easy, pick up a mini add-a-fuse at any autoparts store, Plug it into the fuse box run wire to GPS, done.

The wire goes down behind the front of the a pillar trim panel and then it's tucked in along the side of the dash (near the door) Don't have it hard wired yet, the stereo shop is doing it for me on the 11th of Feb.
