I can't seem to find what forum this needs to go in, so moderators please move if it's incorrect.

First off, Hi everyone. My name is Justin, and I am the owner (well, my wife owns) a 2005 chevy cobalt LS. It's been a really nice car the time we've had it, although it's had a few problems we've gotten fixed.

Anyways, I have a question. For the longest time, we have had our service engine light on, and when we pulled the code, it pointed to 'cylinder head leaking oil, or front or rear o2 sensor showing wrong value'. I can't exactly remember what the code was, but that was the basic description for it. The car does not run rough at all. It runs like the day we got it, but the light will not go away.

At first, when it first came one, my wife stopped at a stop sign. Light came on. She drove about 15 minutes like that, than it went off. After that it came on again and stayed on. (I remember ONCE it went off and stayed off for about an hour of driving, than came back on).

None of the above mentioned times did the car start acting up or run rough. Any ideas what the problem could be? The o2 sensors are about $100 a piece, so just throwing them at it for no reason doesn't sound sensible.

We are looking to trade it in for a newer car soon, and don't want that to be a negative factor in trade-in value. Please help!

First off, welcome to the forum. Second you said oil leak. Is the car "using oil" does the level go down over the course of say a week?

No oil leaks, no oil pressure drop, no nothing of the sorts. Clean as a whistle under there. Forgot to mention it's only got 40k on it.

I would take it in and get it checked out. The polution control elements of your exhaust are still under warranty, along with your engine internals. It may not cost you anything to get fixed.

No, but there's a code for a gasket that's no good. The error code describes head gasket or manifold gasket torn/leaking? Something of the nature.

The car doesn't run rough at all, and I have no performance/mileage issues, so I think it's just a dummy light, but no way to tell. Autozone won't clear the light as they said it's illegal, and the dealership wanted $80 to clear it.

I'm not sure of the legality of this so at your own risk:

"rent" a reader before trading in your car. By that I mean buy one, clear the code, then return the reader.

Or buy one off of ebay, clear the code, and re-sell it. It may be a larger investment, but unless you know someone who has one, no retail place will just clear it for you. (they are afraid of lawsuits)

yes but if there IS a problem, wouldn't that just be pointless as the light would come back on again? What I am trying to do is diagnose the problem, not get rid of the light (Fixing the problem should make the light go away)

The warranty is also based on time, not just miles. How is your gas mileage? If your gas mileage is nothing like it should be replace the sensors. Had a similar prob with my Ram, actually is was actually hesitating and jerking and then the CEL came on took it to Autozone, they ran the codes and it came back to upstream O2 sensor. Replaced the sensor and now getting an extra 25 percent to the tank.
