I've had this car for a few weeks and just noticed this noise.
It sounds like if you tapped 2 pennies together over and over.
Seems to be coming from somewhere around the air filter.

Doesn't SEEM to increase with pressing the gas pedal.
Just steady ticking.

Maybe its just an exhaust leak?!

I have a video with sound of the noise. Kind of hard to hear BC it was windy out.

I just want to know what the sound is.

Please, someone help me. I would really hate this to end up being a collapsed lifter or something.

First off welcome!

Secondly if it was a collapsed lifter it would get faster with the faster the engine rpms go, and most lifters re-inflate themselves if they collapse.

What kind of Cobalt is it? That will help us to determine what the sound could possibly be. Give us the year of it as well as the trim (LS,LT,Sport,SS NA, SS).

Not the heat shield for sure... That to me sounds like one of the chain guides. Which chain is hard to tell. Take it to a local shop, where they can put a stethoscope on the cover and try to figure it out.

Hard to tell from that sound clip, but for sure it could your alternator, A/C compressor, Serpentine idler, serpentine or a lot of other stuff, that's why it is best to get it diagnose by a technician or a good mechanic.

Thank you

You mentioned AC compressor.

Before you mentioned this, I thought it was completely unrelated.
When I turn on my AC or heat, the blower motor makes a humming noise.
Hmmm....

Yeah that sounds like some kind of chain noise to me. The timing chain tensioners in these car are known to go bad. Either that or you have a diesel cobalt lol.

FYI don't listen to 1slobalt. just saying.

Went to the Chevy dealer today, they told me it was just the injectors ticking like they normally do.

He was older and I question his hearing. Going to a different dealer tomorrow.

A second opinion is a good idea! Hopefully you have more success at the new dealership.
