Checking to see if anyone knows what the button is for under the steering column. I was removing the plastic covers around the column and noticed a small access panel on the under side. Folloed it up to a button under the bottom of the shaft.
Does anyone know what it is for?

If your key gets stuck in the ignition, you press that button in and it'll release your key from the locked position.

Correct, if lets say your battery dies suddently, you won't be able to remove the key because you don't have any power to activate the solenoid that releases the ignition barrel when you put the car in park.

So this button permits you to turn the key to "OFF" so you can pull it out.

Did you put some sort of lubricant on the button? My key locks every once in a while and I just leave that access panel off so I can release it manually. I know I need a new module, but I was wondering since I saw that lubricant on the button if it helps it unlock easier.

Thanks for the information. I hope I remember it if I happen to be in that situation.
